<p>Checking the numbers has been drilled into people pursuing weight loss for decades, which is why you shouldn’t beat yourself up over it. But you need to understand why there’s more to fat loss than numbers on a scale.</p>

<p><strong>Does This Exercise Routine Sound Familiar?</strong></p>
<p>In efforts to get fit and lose fat, you join the gym, and start hitting the treadmill or elliptical trainer. You start with three sessions a week. But those 30 or 40 minute sessions don’t seem to be doing very much.</p>
<p>So, being very determined, this person, who could be you or I, adds another session, convinced that this’ll make the vital difference.</p>
<p>Before you know it, we’re looking at 5 sessions, which we’re absolutely convinced will do the trick, especially as we’re watching our diet too. Yet, somehow the fat’s not going anywhere. Now, if you do this you might feel ‘fitter’, at first, but nobody’s noticing any difference in the shape of your body.</p>
<p><strong>The End Result</strong></p>
<p>So you keep working at it, until you start to feel drained, worn down and no longer feeling fit at all. Wow, that’s pretty frustrating- all that effort and you actually feel worse than when you started.</p>
<p>Sure, you feel ‘better’, at first, but don’t notice any fat loss, long after a routine’s had a chance to work.  So you keep upping things until you feel like you’ve been hit by a train, with no energy to spare.</p>
<p><strong>Why Does This Happen?</strong></p>
<p>What many people don’t realize is that aerobic exercise actually trains your body to store fat, in preparation for the next session. So, even if, in the short term, it seems easier to climb several sets of stairs, your body is preparing itself to go through the motions in the future.</p>
<p>Of course, fairly easy work like climbing stairs might feel easier, but this kind of routine doesn’t really help with anything more intense. If you’re asked to go outside of the realm of moderate paced exercise, you’ll find your body’s not that well adapted.</p>
<p>In essence, aerobic exercise makes your body good at ‘easy work’ but doesn’t actually increase your body’s capacity for anything harder.</p>
<p><strong>The Alternative</strong></p>
<p>Thankfully, there’s an alternative, which is becoming more and more widespread in the world of fitness and fat loss. Where, once, aerobic exercise was dominant, science has shown that other forms of exercise are far more effective.</p>
<p>If you want to burn fat, then you need to consider a program, that gives you high intensity, resistance based exercise. In other words, you work hard, for a short period, in order to actually increase your body’s capacity for work.</p>
<p>This type of exercise burns fat, <em>after the exercise is completed</em>, rather than storing it up for next time. This vital difference is down to the fact that the harder your body works, the more energy it needs to restore your muscles.</p>
<p><strong>The Benefits</strong></p>
<p>And, as you’re working intensely, for short periods of time, you don’t spend all day at the gym. It’s common for this type of routine to last 15-20 minutes, a few times a week. You need to rest between sessions, so that the full effect is felt, as your body repairs itself.</p>
<p>Finding a way to improve fitness and fat loss which actually depends on getting good rest will, of course, help to stop the feeling that you’re permanently run down, associated with all that high frequency aerobic exercise.</p>
<p>Plus you’re actually burning fat, not storing it up, which is what we all <em>really</em> want!</p>

<p>Your body won’t have enough time to recover properly, which can lead to poor results. People who get into a routine of over-exercise tend to think that they are doing the right thing, because they’d expect more work to mean more results. Unfortunately, things aren’t that simple.</p>
<p>Too much working out leaves us burned out, when we should be burning fat, by doing things the right way. It’s very demotivating when you don’t get the results you want, which may be familiar if you’ve ever tried a fad diet plan.</p>
<p>Rest and sleep are vital for getting the body to do the recovery work, stopping your body from becoming worn down. You won’t burn fat if your body is in a state of disrepair from too much exercise and too little rest. This can even affect your immune system, causing sickness!</p>
<p><strong>How do I Make Sure My Body Recovers Properly?</strong></p>
<p>The most effective resistance training programs require 1-3 days of rest between each high intensity session, you won’t get enough recovery if you exercise every day. Most of the time 2 days should be considered as a minimum, unless otherwise advised.</p>
<p>But leaving a gap between sessions isn’t the only element. You need to make sure you get plenty of sleep too.  Sleep allows us to recover from stress, as well as burning fat and helping the body to repair, so good sleep is recommended to everyone.</p>
<p>The ideal range for sleep is 7 to 9 hours. While I know some people who lose the health benefits by sleeping for too long it’s far more common, in our busy world, to get less sleep than we need.  The latest thinking states that the body likes to sleep in 90 minute chunks, so 7½ hours of sleep seems to best fit most people’s needs and lifestyles.</p>
<p><em>Treat the body right and you’ll soon come to the conclusion that the rest is, indeed, as important as the exercise, if not more so.</em></p>

<p>Throw in the “if I had a dollar&#8230;” scenario, where stars all claim they love junk food, despite being a size zero and you have to question what’s going on.</p>
<p>Sometimes they’ll throw back the curtain and whisper about a crazy fad diet, used only for a short time (of course), to prepare for a role or tour. Whether that’s the infamous lemonade diet or some other crazy concoction, you know it’s going to be leaving the body without the range of nutrients it needs.</p>
<p>The world of celebrity nutrition is so full of smokescreens and half truths that you have to wonder what, exactly, they are hiding from us. If it was simply a balanced diet and the right kind of exercise program, why don’t they tell us that?</p>

<p>There’s the classic meal skipping, going out to lunch and having only water or juice approach. Come on- don’t they know what happens to the body when it doesn’t get regular food? It goes into shut down and reserves fat- I thought they taught this at kindergarten these days!</p>
<p>Another evergreen celebrity cheat is the coffee and cigarettes approach to kill appetite. Sure it has some tiny amount of metabolism increasing power but it’s an approach that kills more than just appetites!</p>
<p>Then there’s laxative abuse, which’ll leave you feeling like crap, cocaine and diet pills or fasting. I’m sure you don’t need me to point out that they’re bad news for anyone, whether they are looking to burn fat or not.</p>
<p>You even have celebrities that can turn something as positive as exercise into an unhealthy obsession, doing it to excess- without the right nutrition and rest between sessions.</p>
<p><strong>Why Does This Celebrity Diet Culture Exist?</strong></p>
<p>Why does all this get so much coverage in the media? My theory is that both the public and private faces of celebrity diets promote the idea that there are super quick shortcuts to a fantastic body.</p>
<p>They present some methods as good and highlight the craziest celebrity excesses, so that the next fad diet appeals to everyone else- because you get used to the idea of shortcuts. And then, you keep switching diets, because you never get that shortcut result you were promised.</p>
<p><strong>Can We Say Goodbye To Celebrity Fads?</strong></p>
<p>Those in the know, in the real world, appreciate there are no viable shortcuts, but there are solutions. Healthy food, good exercise and rest- the simple backbone of a healthy, attractive body and mind. The best news- embracing a lifestyle like this avoids diets, because it turns your body into a fat burning machine.</p>
<p>So, you can put those days of flipping between fad diets behind you. Who needs them? At best they work for a short time (like the ones where you put weight back on after a while). At worst they’re dangerous, relying on gimmicks and limiting your range of food (boring!).</p>
